In the premiere episode set in Chicago, 8-year-old Penelope "Punky" Brewster and her dog Brandon are discovered by the cantankerous building manager, Henry Warnimont, living in an abandoned apartment. Punky explains that her troubles began when her father left her and her mother, Susan. Recently, Susan claimed they were going on a trip, but she ended up leaving Punky and Brandon at a shopping center, leaving them homeless. Fortunately, Punky receives food regularly from her upstairs neighbor, 8-year-old Cherie Johnson, who brings meals from her grandmother, Betty. Henry captures some cherished moments with the group at his photography studio. Later, Punky's attempt to tidy up Henry's apartment backfires, as he returns home angry at the changes she made.
