Mark Kermode's Secrets of Cinema (2018)

S2E2 British history movies

Mark Kermode asserts that 'history' represents a defining genre of British cinema. While America showcases vast landscapes in road films and westerns, and vibrant urban settings for crime dramas, Britain boasts a rich tapestry of historical narratives spanning two thousand years. To illustrate this, Mark examines notable films depicting British history chronologically, beginning with the Roman conquest and progressing through the medieval era, the Tudor dynasty, the English Civil War, and into the 18th and 19th centuries. He highlights the diverse styles and themes that characterize each era, demonstrating how captivating stories often blend fact with imagination.
